Learn how to make a Modern Japanese Rice Pouch in this in-person class with Claudia Martinez! Using Karen Steven's Modern Rice Pouch pattern we will walk through all the steps of creating your very own pouch from fabric scraps. Students will have the option to either hand stitch or machine sew the exterior panel of their pouch - both methods will be discussed during the class.
This is a 2-part / 2 Separate Days class. On Day 1 we will be constructing the exterior panel of the bag. On Day 2 we will sew and construct the pouch.
Class Prerequisites:
- A working sewing machine that you know how to operate
It is possible to completely stitch the pouch by hand, but in the class we will be using a sewing machine on Day 2 to construct the pouch. Hand sewing methods will be discussed, but you may not be able to complete the bag by the end of class if you opt to hand sew the bag together at the end.
- Beginner friendly class, minimal sewing experience needed.
- You only need to bring your sewing machine to Class #2.

About Your Instructor:
Claudia Martinez is the owner of Snuggly Monkey. She first had the opportunity to visit Japan on a high school exchange program and quickly fell in love with the country and culture. Claudia went on to minor in Japanese at Duke University before returning to work and live in Japan after graduation. During her years living in rural Japan, she had the opportunity to learn a variety of traditional Japanese crafts, which only deepened her appreciation for Japan's rich cultural heritage. Claudia has been teaching beginner Sashiko classes for several years and loves having the opportunity to share this beautiful, meditative art form with others.
