Hilos Omega has been producing high quality threads & yarns in Mexico since 1948. Hilo Vela El Globo is their line of embroidery thread that is perfect for all kinds of hand embroidery, cross stitch, friendship bracelets and other handcrafts.

Hilo Vela is mercerized to strengthen the thread, improve colorfastness, and reduce shrinkage, however it is less mercerized than other brands of embroidery floss, such as Cosmo or DMC. The lower level of mercerization produces a thread that has a more matte finish and the individual plies will fluff out more over time to produce fuller stitches. It is this thread that gives traditional Mexican embroidery its distinctive look.

Gorgeous color!

These threads are so rich with saturated color. And I think they’re colorfast as I’ve never seen the beautiful Mexican blouses’ embroidery run. The matte finish is great to mix in with perle cotton and floss.

Lovely colors - and definitely colorfast

I ordered 8 colors of this floss when I signed up for the Domestika.org class Contemporary Embroidery with Traditional Mexican Needlework, after reading about both in a Snuggly Monkey email. I have tried only one design, in that class, so far, but the colors are lovely and the floss is fun to stitch -- and it is different than the flosses I'm used to. Wondering about colorfastness, since it's a new brand for me, I stitched a 10" line of 6-strands of each color and a few small designs in off-white cotton and washed it with my regular laundry, and there was no color bleeding at all. I understand this floss fills out embroidered areas better than more mercerized floss, and I look forward to seeing that effect over time. I have always loved the Mexican embroidered blouses and now have enough floss in enough colors to enjoy that style in my own embroidering.
